Mysteries of the Black Eyed Kids
Over the last ten years, the term “black-eyed kids” has been popping up all over the internet. What are the black-eyed kids? Are they real? According to some witnesses, they are strange, young children, usually in their teens or pre-teens, who insist on coming inside somebody’s home or car. Not only are they intimidating and pushy, they also have extremely strange eyes—fully black—as if the pupil stretches out covering the iris and sclera.
There are many stories on the internet about individuals who had the misfortune of coming across the “BEK’s”. Are they for real, though? Or is the entire phenomenon just an urban legend? Either way, the black-eyed kids do seem to be rather creepy. After all, who would want to experience strange, non-human looking kids with huge, pitch black eyes and frightening demeanors knocking on their doors or car windows?
The first well documented and discussed BEK account came from Brian Bethel, a journalist who claims to have run across these children in 1998. He claims that two young, pre-teen kids approached him as he sat in his car in a parking lot. At first, they seem normal. They wore normal clothes and—from a distance—looked like any other 11 or 12 year olds. But as they approached his car, he began feeling an overly ominous feeling coming over him. In his account, he describes the feeling as, “fight-or-flight responses.” He knew that something didn’t feel right, but he didn’t know exactly what.
The boys told him that they wanted to see a movie but didn’t have any money. They asked Mr. Bethel if he could take them back to their house so that they could get some money for the movies. He apologized and told them no, but they didn’t leave. They kept insisting and insisting, almost to the point of harassing, that Bethel would let them in his car and give them a ride home. Eventually, they started to get angry, and their eyes turned coal black, completely lacking irises and pupils.
For a few moments, Bethel was paralyzed with an utter feeling of terror, before he finally pushed his fears aside and drove away. Sure, this story is very creepy, but is it true? Well, there are plenty of other accounts from people who claim to have witnessed such children. There seems to be a few similarities in each experience:
· The black eyed kids appear to be around 12 – 17 years old.
· They dress in normal clothes for children of their times.
· The events seem to happen around late evening/early dusk.
· There is a sudden sense of wrongness and fear in the witnesses.
· They kids will always ask to be invited into the car/home/wherever.
· When told “no”, they appear to become impatient, demanding, and even angry.
· They will never leave until the individual ends the contact by shutting the door on their faces or driving away.
· They are never seen or heard from again in that particular area.
If anyone ever has invited the BEK’s into their homes or vehicles, there are no accounts of it. What are the black-eyed kids, though? Where do they come from? Are they just normal human kids wearing strange contacts (there really are black sclera contacts). Could the unexplained feelings of “fear” that the witnesses experience just be them over reacting to an uncomfortable situation?
Or is there more to this phenomenon than any of us could ever know? Are there really supernatural entities out there who take on the forms of human children? Whether you believe the tales or not, they are strange nonetheless.
